Chapter Seven

Matty watched as Aldis dived under the water. He watched his lover disappear. Marvel waddled over to sit by Matty’s feet, releasing a low groan. Matty leaned down and stroked one of the dog’s longer ears. “Yeah, I miss him already, too.”

The waves crashed against the shore, uncaring for Matty’s suffering, or his worry, just as they always were. Despite the constant presence of the ocean being comforting at times, other times, like now, it was a depressing reminder that Matty was a spec of sand on the earth, that his life was virtually meaningless when it came to the vast ocean in front of him.

And it was meaningless to the mers that lived in it, especially Haelen.

Matty shivered. That could try to hurt him all they wanted. He just didn’t want them to hurt Aldis by accident. Or on purpose. He had said that changing a man into a mer was illegal, but Aldis was their prince. He’d be forgiven for that, right?

Though Matty had said he would lock himself inside right away, he had trouble moving. He stayed where he was for several long minutes, reaching out to his mate with his mind, and then sighing, giving up, when Aldis got so far away that Matty couldn’t feel him.

“Come on. We need to go inside,” he said, looking down at Marvel.

Marvel looked back up at him, wagged his tail, and followed Matty into the house as he locked up and blew out the candles.

He was just shutting the curtains when a head of black hair appeared over the waves. Matty sighed. Aldis was back already. Good. That was fast.

Except, the person who walked out of the water was not Aldis.

He had the same long black hair that all the mers Matty had ever come into contact with had, only it was in a braid. His spear wasn’t as decorative as Aldis’s either. It looked plainer, but the point at the end of it seemed no less deadly to Matty.

He shivered. That wasn’t Aldis. That wasn’t even Haelen. Neither were the four other mers who walked out of the water behind their friend. They all had their sights locked onto Matty’s house. Marvel howled, and the mers approached.
